TAKE A RISK!

I remember where I was when my life changed forever, and not in the best way.

Roy Elementary Gym class.

I'm not exactly sure what the purpose was, but I was lined up to take down my weight and height in front of my entire class.  You'd first step up to the wall to be measured and then step on the scale, with both measurements spoken aloud and written down.  At that moment, in second grade, age 7, I first realized I was the shortest and heaviest girl in my class.  And I felt ashamed-- fat and ashamed. That moment began the long road of self-loathing and embarrassment with my body.  Cue eating disorder the moment puberty hit, and I felt, for the first time, the feeling of being seen as thin...

Fast-forward to my honeymoon.  At that time of significant vulnerability, unlike anything I had known up to that point, I wore a bikini.  Once.  Without another soul but Randy around.  I felt intense embarrassment but tried to hide it because that's what you're supposed to do-- be ok showing more skin.  Even now, as I type, I can feel the fear but, most importantly, the shame.  As married life progressed, my shame deepened.  I was embarrassed that my body got so big during pregnancy, embarrassed that I didn't lose the weight before walking out of the hospital, embarrassed that I got so many deep, deep stretch marks, embarrassed, embarrassed, embarrassed, embarrassed.  Then came the shame that I was too tired, overwhelmed, strung out, {this} and {that}.  And then PTSD.  You guessed it-- shame, unlike anything I had ever experienced.

I have worked for nearly 18 months on myself.  All day, every day, I am doing things to heal my mind and my body.  I have worked to change my own mind and to feel comfortable being me, the girl I am now.  More and more, I'm becoming grateful for this magnificent body that houses my soul, this body that has kept me going despite my horrendous treatment of it, this fantastic gift.

When I put together my New Year's Bingo, I wrote a vague "Take a Risk" on my first square, knowing I wanted it to be a significant risk.  I have little risks, like trying new foods and traveling to new lands, but I wanted it to be something that meant something huge to me, even if I didn't know exactly what at the time.  Over the last few weeks, as I have marked off some of my squares or made plans to work towards marking others off, I'd look at that square, "Take a Risk," and wonder what it could and would be.  And, just like that day in second grade, a thought entered my mind that has become just as much of a core memory-- Wear a Bikini in public.

And like that thought when I was 7, it's become much larger the more I think about it.  Fear, you better believe it, at just the thought of actually going through with it.  But also a sense of bravery.  Because I know my why.

I'm not doing it because that's what you're "supposed" to do when you're married.  I'm not doing it because I want to be attractive to others or because I finally feel like I am thin enough for everyone's approval, including my own.  I'm not doing it to showcase my current health choices.  I'm not doing it because my two impressionable sons will not be there or because Shelby will be, and I want her to see me as "hip" and "cool."

I'm doing it (I AM DOING IT!!!) because I want to prove to myself that I am not disgusting, embarrassing, shameful, or utterly unattractive.  I'm doing it because I want to prove to myself more than anyone else in the world that I love myself more than I care about what I perceive to be the opinions of others.  I'm doing this because I know that modesty is more than covering up; it's dressing for the right reasons.  I'm doing this because I want to have an outward manifestation of the transformation I am going through thanks to PTSD (and I do mean "thanks!").  I want to change my own mind, my own core memory, about my body.

So wish me luck as I work towards the biggest risk I could ever imagine, a risk that has felt significant and life-changing from nearly my earliest memories.  I'm going to pose for a picture on a beach or in front of a waterfall, with hundreds of people milling around, and then I am going to display that picture in my home, not to brag, but to show the world what I have been working on inside my own fragile mind.

THIS IS ME!  I LOVE THIS GIRL!  I AM MORE THAN ENOUGH!

And just like that, my wish has become a goal because I've written it down and have realistic steps to accomplish it.  I'm doing this.  It's going to happen!  (I feel sick to my stomach)...

Bro's Date

Tyson has the ability, with his membership, to bring one friend to the Rock Shop each month for free.  Brennon hasn't shown much interest, so it was a surprise when he announced he would join Tyson.

"Hey, what if we went rock climbing and then went to dinner together at Zip's after?"
When asked if he'd liked it, he replied, "I did like it, but not enough to get a membership yet.  I'd love to go once a month and make it a monthly date with Tyson, though."  And just like that, my heart swelled within me.  A monthly brother date!  I love that idea!!

Hudson's quilt

It's a tad late for the shower but not too late for his birth.

I had this fabric picked out before we knew it was a boy.  The morning after the Gender Reveal, I booked it to Joann Fabrics to get it.  It's taken me a little longer than normal-- which is funny because it was a whole lot less work than my standard quilts-- but I'm pleased with how it turned out.  I can't wait to snuggle Hudson in it!

400

Randy joined Orange Theory again at the beginning of the year; I followed suit on January 26th.  Today, he walked in to find his name on their Brag Board.

Sadly, his 400th class was cut short-- his ulcer was acting up BIG TIME!  Work has been super-duper tremendously stressful recently, and he's feeling the effects.  Man, I love how hard he works to meet our needs and wants.  I'm the luckiest girl in the world.

Brennon & Aimie

 Sadie's 2025

Since it was the girls' choice, Aimie drove.  It was fun to see Brennon's nerves as he got into the back without realizing he was her date.  His giggle as she said, "You're MY date, so you sit up front," was endearing.

Brennon: "It was easy to stay with Aimie; she kept looping her arm through mine.  I liked that she made me feel so comfortable."  I love these girls as much as I love these guys.  Such a great group of kids!

Society Member

Brennon has been getting so much mail inviting him to colleges nationwide.  It still seems surreal that my three youngest are all in high school.  Time has flown by so much faster than I anticipated.  Most, we look at and throw away, but this one caught my eye.  Brennon has been inducted into the National Society of High School Scholars!!  I love it when others recognize my kids for their hard work.  Congrats to my Brennon!!

Horror

I have had issues with bloody noses for as long as I can remember.  My mom has stories of me waking with them, and I have no memory of them.  However, one thing that I have never experienced is scaring myself upon waking because of one...

I squealed when I saw myself in the mirror.  Oh, the horror...  Curse you, dry air!

Zonked

This is not staged.  I walked into my room to find Shelby 100% asleep on my bed.  Being a Senior is exhausting!  Cutie!

Brennon

 Aimie Williams
I hope you're as impressed as I am when you discover that the pinata is homemade.  As in, HOMEMADE!
Rachel: "Brennon, are you available on Friday?  Asking for a friend..."  He was not but was able to ask for the day off when he realized what must be happening.  When Aimie dropped by, she had the personality that every mother hopes for-- she was giddy and bubbly and let him know how excited she was to be asking her boy.  "I am so happy you can go!"  As she was leaving, she excitedly said, "One more hug!" without an ounce of hesitation or embarrassment.  Who wouldn't feel special?!

Brennon's answer may not have been as "homemade" as hers, but he wanted to answer her tonight since the dance is in five days.  A purchased Ice Cream cake from DQ with a sign that says, "The decision was a Piece of Cake.  Ice Cream: YES!!!"

The Guys

It is no secret that I love the friend group Brennon is part of.  I could write a novel of examples, but I think this video will show what I cannot express much better.

Happy Valentine's Day 2025

The boys got together a few days prior to create, choreograph, and edit this fun video.  They then made Valentine's cards with a QR code to scan and bought each of the six girls their favorite candy to be delivered on Valentine's Day.  Since they met up at our house beforehand, I got to witness the Before and After of their efforts.  I imagined for myself how it would feel to open the door as a teenage girl and see six handsome guys wishing me a Happy Valentine's Day.  I may or may not have blushed and swooned just a little.

Tosha Williams to "The Moms": "I just wanted to tell you what fantastic sons you have!  It made the girls' day to have the young men they spend so much time with make them feel valued.  None of them are dating, but they still went to the time and effort to make them feel special.  Seriously, so cool of them!  I feel so lucky my daughter has such good friends!  I love being able to say yes to almost everything because of the caliber of kids I know she is with.  Thank you for being such great moms and raising such great sons!"

Neighbors

Our Stake Patriarch passed away from Leukemia last week.  Brennon is great friends with his Granddaughter, and he and Shelby got their Patriarchal Blessings from him.  He's also a friend from working in the Temple when Randy and I worked together on Friday nights.  He's been a great friend to our family for many years.  So I cannot for the life of me tell you why seeing this picture hurt so much.

Kristin Hunt, his daughter, and our friend: "My dad and Caden are neighbors!"

Even now, I skim over the picture without really looking.  I can't explain it; I only know how it makes me feel.  I wish there were a way to guard myself from things that are going to take my breath away.  Especially those times when it hurts but I don't really understand why.  It just does.

Daily Valentine

While exiting Orange Theory today, a friend asked if Randy and I were going anywhere special.  I'm not going to lie-- I'd forgotten that today was Valentine's Day.  So, I told her, "I don't really care to celebrate some holidays because Randy and I do things together daily.  Every day is Valentine's Day at our house."  Here's just one example of how much Randy loves me.

I started to notice a difference in my PTSD beginning in December.  I worked daily to calm myself down, doing little things to soften this, unclench that, deep breaths here, slow down there, etc. But my nights were no longer calm; they were actually the opposite.  I was waking up clenched and sore and having worsening episodes of Sleep Paralysis where I truly wondered at times if I was dying.  The worst one was that I was awake enough to realize what was happening around me but not enough to make myself breathe-- I wondered if I'd suffocate while awake.  I couldn't make a sound, couldn't move a muscle, couldn't get Randy's attention to ground me and convince me that I was still alive in my body.  It was the scariest thing I have ever experienced, even if only for a few minutes.

Days before the episodes started to become regular, Randy was down in Houston for work.  While out to dinner with Jerry & Veniece, they were talking about how I was doing.  Veniece mentioned that her sister has PTSD and has had great success using medical marijuana.  On the morning of my worst episode, I made the decision to switch doctors (my current doctor talked down to me and made me feel like a hypochondriac) and asked to try medical marijuana.  December 15th, I got the confirmation that I was a candidate.  Because I was waiting for the prescription paper (to ensure that I was still temple worthy), I didn't go to our local Pot Shop immediately.  In all honesty, I was terrified and still grappling with my reality.

I finally got the paper, but before I was even awake the morning after receiving it, Randy had already gone to the shop to scope out what they had available and to ask questions he knew would make me cry.  When I heard what he'd done for me, knowing he'd gone into that Shop for me, I burst into tears.  He drove me there while I cried in the front seat.  "What is this life?!"  He held my hand as we walked to the front door.  He ushered me in as I took in the darkened sights and skunk smells that enveloped us while I silently freaked out.  And my Mister handed over cash to purchase marijuana for me.  That is the Valentine that I have.  He is the best thing that has ever happened to me.

So, no, we are not doing anything special for Valentine's Day because every day that he continues to choose me is better than any day that the world sets aside to celebrate love.  Every day is special at our house.  I'm the luckiest girl in the world because I'm Randy Dirks' Valentine.

p.s. Since taking my first gummy, my life has been transformed.  I feel like myself again, better than even pre-care care Stephanie (remember how tired she was after having 5 kids and a husband that traveled extensively?!).  Not only do I sleep better at night, but my days are more calm as well.  I used to yawn or gasp for breath for HOURS every. single. day (effects of my brain/body break and screwed up autonomic system)-- no more.  I am completely 100% off of my depression/anxiety meds (I knew that if I could get good rest, I'd feel better than ever!), as well as all caffeine, and I no longer feel like I need to sleep for years to feel normal.  I still see evidence of PTSD, which can still be very discouraging, but because of how everything is right now, my learned skills actually work.  I am so, so grateful for the Lord's timing in all of this.  I was drowning, but now I am resting safely on the beach, in the sun, and loving life.

PJ Party

In preparation for a Youth Activity, Jamie let me use her machines.  Not only did we use them for YW, we hosted a few different groups to come and make PJ pants.  Stress, but also FUN!

Brennon set up a double-date where the guys purchased matching fabric based on the girls' likes.  SO, SO FUN!!
Roman & June

Brennon & Siena

Siena loves cows, and June loves purple.

Roman let me know that this was his to-date most fun date.  SCORE!
