Undifferentiated Embryonal Sarcoma of the Liver

The third most common type of liver cancer, which means it is very rare.  They see a case in this hospital once every few years with a total of only 150 documented cases around the world.

The success rate is "Pretty good.  Most survive.  We have every reason to be optimistic.  This is a cancer that responds well to Chemotherapy."

The short answer to the plan is to slow the tumor growth, shrink the tumor with Chemo, then remove the tumor surgically, leaving as much healthy liver as possible.  He still has a fair amount of normal liver, which means the need for a liver transplant is unlikely.

The plan does not include radiation at this time.  However, since each case is different, it could be added at some point, but they said it was unlikely.

Step one: PET Scan in a day or two.  Doctors use PET Scans to detect Cancer cells.
Step two: Add a Central Port/Portacath or a Hickman Line.  Depending on the surgery schedule this will happen before Monday.

There will be four cycles of Chemotherapy, each cycle lasting three weeks, with a total of 12 weeks.  It takes 3-4 days for each Chemo treatment, during which time he will be admitted in the hospital.  After that, we have to stay within a one hour radius of the hospital for about a week and a half.  That leaves almost a week that he can spend at home before coming back to the hospital.

He will most likely loose his hair.

This is the information we know today.  I'm sure we will get more and more each time we talk to the doctors, staff, and specialists.  We understand that with the small amount of information we've been given you may look up information for yourself to find out more about it, we get that.  Whatever information you may find on the Internet is highly unreliable due to the rarity of this type.  It is also unreliable due to the very small numbers of case studies in recent years.  If you choose to look up information about anything to do with this type of Cancer, we plead that you do not share this with us.  We have a lot of things going for us, a lot of  optimistic reasons for a full recovery, and anything else is will either give us false hope or scare and discourage us.  There may be case studies, but this is Caden's case, we'll just see what his outcome is as we go along.  The only information that we will find relevant is what our actually specialists tell us.  We thank you for your concern, but ask to be kept in the dark with your findings.  Thank you!
