When I told Randy that I was giving Brennon the money, he posed a question that ticked me off at first, but made me realize soon after that he was right: "Shouldn't we teach Brennon to find the owner first, instead of simply taking what he finds?" I, like Brennon, recognized that he found that money and felt he was entitled to keep it. But Randy wanted to teach him an even more valuable lesson. We sat Brennon down and asked him how he would feel losing $100. He said he would be SO sad. We then asked how he would feel if someone found it and gave it back. He said he would be SO glad. And then the light when on above his head-- you could see it on his expressive face. Randy made sure to tell him that if the owner cannot be found, sure, the money is his, but we should always first look for the owner and return things when we can.
Brennon may not have gotten the $100, but he (and I) learned a valuable lesson. Thanks to Randy. Brennon was OK with it, but he was even more OK when Randy presented him with a finder's fee: A fidget cube. Learned a valuable lesson and got a gift the other kids were super jealous over. Score! I'm super proud of Brennon, but I am also so proud Randy is mine. This was a really great lesson to teach, one that I needed to learn from as well. For the record: Randy was right. There, I said it.
So proud of you, sweet Brennon! Love you ❤️
